Rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine, North Texas has faced one roadblock after another from confusion over registration to delays caused by last week’s deadly winter storm. Now, there’s another hurdle in the way: a cut to the region’s state-provided vaccines.
On Monday, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins announced that the Fair Park vaccination site had run out of doses. Texas’ health department had decided to redirect 42,000 shots reserved for Dallas and Tarrant counties to other parts of the state.
This week, Dallas County begins its partnership with the federal government for the county’s 17 most underserved ZIP codes, Jenkins said in a tweet. He hopes the Texas Department of State Health Services will reconsider siphoning doses away from Dallas-Fort Worth.
The distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Texas has been uneven, disjointed and inefficient. What the state needs is a clear and strategic plan to get 100%.
Whitley wants to see efforts in North Texas extend beyond the four largest counties. He estimated as much as 8% of the around 200,000 vaccinations Tarrant County has distributed have been to non-county residents and 31% of the registrants on the wait list are from outside Tarrant County.
“We re going to want to figure out ways to set up sites in those surrounding counties,” Whitley said. “The thing that we re constantly trying to do is to prepare for what I hope is a tsunami of vaccines that will be coming in the next three to five weeks.”
Counties receive little notice of how many vaccines they will receive on a weekly basis, Whitley explained. Eads said all four judges are hoping to get two to three weeks of notice on the number of vaccines they will receive to allow for more staffing and better planning.
