Arlington High School student wins Thoreau Scholarship

Liam Nokes, a student at Arlington High School, will be entering college this autumn as a Thoreau Scholar.
The scholarship, named for the 19th-century naturalist and author Henry David Thoreau, is a prestigious award given annually to only eight Massachusetts high school seniors.
The son of Nuria Gine-Nokes and Keith Nokes, Liam credits his interest in the environment to his grandfather Evarist, who taught him about mushrooms. Growing up in Catalonia in Francoist Spain, Evarist hunted mushrooms to help feed his family; in passing along his knowledge to his grandson, Evarist taught Liam about his heritage and the fungi that is the backbone of the biosphere. Liam later expanded upon his early interest in mushrooms by interning with Donald Pfister of Harvard University and studying Boston Harbor Island’s lichens and the effect of water pollution upon them. Who is Jonathan Lourie?
Jonathan Lourie is an American hedge fund manager.
Before his current role, Lourie worked at Morgan Stanley where he oversaw their convertible bond management practice.
He co-founded asset management firm Cheyne Capital, which is one of the largest hedge funds in Europe.
The tycoon was educated at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

A swathe of the Greenland ice sheet may be nearing a “tipping point” into a new unstable state of melting that would be irreversible in the short term, scientists warn.
As the central-western Greenland ice sheet melts, it is also shrinking in height, with its surface exposed to warmer temperatures at lower altitudes that contributes further to melting, according to research published https://www.pnas.org/content/118/21/e2024192118 on Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
