Pupils come up with creative ideas to redesign Darlington Market

CREATIVE youngsters have made their own miniature markets using everything from Lego and cereal boxes to biscuits. Pupils from Skerne Park Academy, in Darlington, were challenged to use everyday items to create their own vision for the future of the town s Victorian market, which is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. The competition was run by Wharton Construction, which is the lead contractor for the project, in conjunction with Market Asset Management (MAM), which runs the market. Using every medium from paint to biscuits, Lego to recycled cereal boxes, they came up with their own ideas on how the historic building could be adapted – including a shop selling spiders, an external water slide and the clock tower being used for abseiling.

Darlington Borough Council has issued information about voting on Thursday, May 6, when residents will have the chance to have a say on who becomes the Police and Crime Commissioner for the Durham Police area and the Mayor for the Tees Valley Combined Authority. There are also by-elections for the Red Hall and Lingfield ward and the Hummersknott ward on Darlington Borough Council. There has been an increase in postal vote applications this year because of concerns about coronavirus. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on 20 April, and for a proxy vote the deadline is 5pm on 27 April. The deadline for registering to vote in Monday, May 19.

RECRUITMENT for a host of new Treasury jobs in Darlington is due to begin in a matter of weeks, The Northern Echo can reveal today. Chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed in the Budget earlier this month that 750 Government officials would be relocating to Darlington with the establishment of a new Treasury North campus. Following the announcement, Mr Sunak confirmed in an interview with the Echo that “key decision makers” would be based in Darlington, and that local people would be able to apply for some of the vacancies. Officials from the business, trade and local government departments will be on the campus.
