A plan to quarantine international students rriving in the Australian state of Tasmania will not go ahead as initially planned, local officials said on Tuesday.New South Wales (NSW) Treasurer Dominic Perrottet told local parliament on Monday .
Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has rejected a push by New South Wales calling for the housing of international students in Hobart quarantine hotels.
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has been in negotiations with Tasmania in a bid to strike a deal after National Cabinet failed to agree on a plan to bring back overseas students at the last meeting.
Under the proposed deal, international students would travel to Tasmania to spend 14 days in hotel quarantine before flying to New South Wales for study.
The NSW hotel quarantine program has been capped at 3,000 return travellers a week by the federal government.
On Tuesday, Mr Gutwein spoke of the proposition saying: "This is not under consideration with our priority remaining the safe management of seasonal workers entering the state and our own international students when public health advice is that it is safe to do so".
