St George Regional Hospital reaches critical number for COVID-19 patients in the ICU: Zero

ST. GEORGE The darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic have been in the intensive care unit of St. George Regional Hospital. During the worst spread of the disease that has killed 263 Southern Utahns and infected 28,231 others, the nurses and doctors tended to a full ICU unit as well as an extra surge ICU unit created to take the excess capacity – standing over multiple deaths per day without friends and family allowed to be bedside. But this week, the darkness has become a bright new day as the number of COVID-19 patients in the ICU reached an important milestone: Zero. We are thrilled with no COVID ICU patients, said Terri Draper, spokesperson for St. George Regional Hospital, which up until January was known as Dixie Regional Medical Center.

Deseret News Survey window closes April 13 Share this story Ravell Call, Deseret News Got thoughts on Dixie State University’s name? The university’s name recommendation committee wants your input. An online survey will be conducted through April 13 as one means of gathering input on the St. George institution’s name and to gauge the importance of the university name reflecting its academic mission, location or area history. Some of the options floated in the survey include Red Rock University, Utah Polytechnic University and St. George University, as well as Dixie State University, Utah’s Dixie University and Greater Zion University. Other options on the survey include Snow Canyon State University, Desert State University and Southwest Utah State.

The matter was resolved with the passage of SB1 on Jan. 28. That base budget included more than $400 million in new education funding, a 6% increase to the value of the weighted pupil unit, which is the building block of education funding in Utah, and funding for enrollment growth and inflation.
