Synopsis
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is proposing to sell airwaves in sub-1 GHz bands of 700, 800 and 900 MHz, and in the over-1 GHz bands of 1,800, 2,100, 2,300 and 2,500 MHz. Auction of 5G spectrum in 3,300-3,600 MHz may follow later in 2021 or even in early 2022.
Also, the government has increased the overall airwaves holding limit to 35% from 25%. It had imposed a 50% cap on combined spectrum holdings in the 700 MHz, 800 MHz and 900 MHz bands.
NEW DELHI: The Cabinet is expected to consider the telecom department’s proposal on the next spectrum auctions at its meeting, which would include a sale of only 4G airwaves and is likely to be held in March, officials familiar with the matter said.
