Australian upper house passes amended bargaining code for media, tech platforms ANI | Updated: Feb 24, 2021 21:16 IST Canberra [Australia], February 24 (ANI): The Australian upper house on Wednesday announced passing of an amended version of the mandatory bargaining code for digital platforms that will make the tech companies share revenue with media businesses. The Treasury Laws Amendment (News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code) Bill 2021 has passed the Senate with government amendments, the Australian Senate tweeted. The country s treasury on Tuesday had presented amendments to the original code, introduced after Facebook removed posts of Australian news outlets and government pages amid the debate with Canberra over the bill.

Digital platform media laws pass Senate with government amendments

The government s new media laws for digital platforms like Facebook and Google have passed the Senate. The News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code was amended earlier this week after Facebook took the historic step of blocking all Australian news from its pages. The amendments must now be passed in the House of Representatives. But the battle to get the laws passed stretches back half a year, to when Mr Frydenberg and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced the draft code for digital platforms in July 2020.
