Wales has announced it will invest £4.9m in the improvement and acceleration of the development of digital citizen services.
The Centre for Digital Public Services, which was established in 2020 as the entity responsible for online public services, will receive the funding.
According to the Welsh government, the announcement is part of its digital strategy focused on harnessing data, digital, technology and artificial intelligence, which is being crowdsourced to test ideas and gather new suggestions.
The funding will be directed to the Centre for Digital Public Services, which was established last year to transform the design and delivery of digital public services. The centre s chief executive Sally Meecham said: “The Centre for Digital Public Services will support the Welsh public sector to deliver good digital public services that meet the needs of all users. It’s absolutely brilliant to have received this investment and the commitment to continue our work. “This will allow us to work with colleagues across the public sector in Wales and our ever-growing network of partners, suppliers and stakeholders to deliver inclusive and accessible public services and ensure the people that design and deliver the services have the right skills, capability, ambition and support.”
Expenditure increases include £385m in extra funding for core NHS services, taking funding for NHS Wales to more than £8.4bn. There is an extra £10m in capital funding for diagnostic equipment and an extra £6m for energy efficiency within the NHS.
There is an uplift of £176m for local government, taking account of the effect of the pandemic on business rates collection and the freeze in the business rates multiplier in 2021-22, with an additional £37m for social housing.
The increase in education spending includes an additional £22m for sixth forms and further education colleges as more students are predicted to stay in education next year, while there is an additional £40m for capital spending on schools, including £5m for net-zero carbon schools.
