Social media giant Facebook on Tuesday said it aimed to comply with the provisions of India’s new IT rules of intermediaries, which come into effect on Wednesday. The U.S.-headquartered firm added that it continued to discuss the issues related to the new guidelines with the government.

If these social media giants fail to comply with the new Information Technology Rules 2021 (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) notified by the government by Wednesday, they may lose their status and protections as intermediaries and criminal action can be taken against them as per the laws of India.

But we must ask ourselves, is it the very concept of democracy that is perceived to be failing or is it liberal democracy that is receiving a pushback?
