Policies and regulations on free flow of data across the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) must be realised urgently to further promote digitalisation and its growing participation in the region, according to Malaysia’s national news agency Bernama.

This call was made before the first ASEAN Digital Ministers Meeting (ADGMIN 1), scheduled to be held via teleconference on January 21 and 22, under the chair of Malaysian Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, and attended by representatives from ASEAN’s dialogue partners including Japan, China, the European Union, the Republic of Korea, and the International Telecommunication Union.

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean should build a new economic ecosystem by promoting the development of digital infrastructure that is accessible for both small businesses and individuals to reinforce its economic recovery efforts and promote sustainable and inclusive growth.
The Royal Thai Embassy in Malaysia said this will help to ensure that the group can be part of the growing digital economy in the region, which is estimated to contribute more than US$240 billion in the next five years.
“On our part, Thailand is developing ‘Asean Digital Hub’, which will help enhance digital infrastructure in Asean, as well as ‘Digital Park Thailand’, as part of our Eastern Economic Corridor.
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama): The inaugural Asean Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN1) will start on Monday with the Senior Officials Meeting (ADGSOM1), laying the groundwork for reshaping Asean’s post-Covid-19 digital landscape.
The virtual meeting from Jan 18-22, hosted by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry from the Kuala Lumpur Hilton, is expected to adopt the Asean Digital Masterplan 2025 (ADM2025).
ADGSOM1, to be headed by the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek, will also see virtual meetings with dialogue partners - the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, India and the European Union (EU) - and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
