Work on new solar plant begins near Boiling Springs

Construction is underway for a new solar plant that will have the capability to provide power to 12,500 homes and multiple businesses in Cleveland County.
The project will be owned and operated by Duke Energy Renewables, a commercial subsidiary of Duke Energy.
Here are five things to know about the solar power plant and local impact:
1. The Broad River Solar power plant will be located on both sides of McCraw Road in Mooresboro. Once complete, the 500 acres of solar panels will be secured by fencing and surrounded by a 50-foot vegetation buffer.
The Public Service Commission of South Carolina has approved Duke Energy’s Green Source Advantage program in South Carolina, enabling the company to expand renewable energy options for customers.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Expanding its significant clean-energy portfolio, Duke Energy has begun construction on the 50-MW Broad River Solar power plant in Cleveland County, N.C.
The project will be owned and operated by Duke Energy Renewables, a commercial subsidiary of Duke Energy. The project was selected as part of the competitive bidding process established by 2017’s landmark solar legislation in North Carolina.
The power plant will contain more than 170,000 solar panels across approximately 500 acres near Boiling Springs. The facility will power the equivalent of 12,500 homes. It is expected to reach commercial operation by the end of 2021.
