SF And 5 Other Schools Tapped For Juul Bellwethers
Law360 (February 2, 2021, 3:18 PM EST) A California federal judge has tapped six lawsuits to serve as bellwethers in a sprawling multidistrict litigation over Juul Labs Inc. and Altria Group Inc. s marketing and sale of e-cigarettes, with school districts across the country bringing the first wave of cases against the companies.
U.S. District Judge William H. Orrick signed the order Monday, teeing up cases led by the San Francisco Unified School District, Tucson Unified School District, The School Board of Palm Beach County, Florida, and Unified School District 265 Goddard in Kansas, as well as the City of Rochester, New Hampshire, and King County, Washington.
Pima County, which reported 736 new cases today, has seen 97,474 of the state’s 727,895 confirmed cases. A total of 12,239 Arizonans have died after contracting COVID-19, including 1,611 deaths in Pima County, according to the Jan. 25 report. The number of hospitalized COVID cases statewide has declined in recent weeks after peaking at 5,082 on Jan. 11 but remains above the peak levels of the summer’s first wave. ADHS reported that as of Jan. 24, 4,229 COVID patients were hospitalized in the state. The summer peak of 3,517 hospitalized COVID patients was set on July 13; that number hit a subsequent low of 468 on Sept. 27, or about one-tenth of the current count.
With nearly 20,000 new cases reported since Friday, the total number of Arizonaâs confirmed novel coronavirus cases closed in on 728,000 as of Monday, Jan 25, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

It’s been a slower than expected roll out for the COVID-19 vaccine, especially for educators. With registration issues occurring earlier in the week and limited doses, extra days are being added to get school staff members vaccinated.

PHOENIX Governor Doug Ducey today announced the appointments of Jeffrey Sklar, Lisa Abrams and Gary Cohen to the Pima County Superior Court to fill the vacancies created by the appointment of Judge John Hinderaker to the United States District Court, District of Arizona and the retirement of Judges Gus Aragón and Leslie Miller.
Jeffrey Sklar is a Partner at Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie, where he has been a commercial litigator since 2010. He represents businesses and business owners in various legal disputes, and he has experience in eminent domain, antitrust, receiverships, and bankruptcy law. He also serves as outside general counsel to the Metropolitan Domestic Water Improvement District and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. In addition, Sklar has been serving since 2018 as a Pima County Superior Court Judge Pro Tem, where he handles civil and family law related settlement conferences.
