Tucson icon celebrates 100th birthday Unmute Dr. Laura Banks-Reed turned 100 Tuesday. She is celebrating in a very special way.  Banks-Reed grew up in Barrio Anita. She wrote a book, from the Barrio to the Boardroom. The book was part of birthday book drive. The following schools will each be receiving 100 of the books - Laura Banks Elementary, Davis Elementary, Manzo Elementary, Cavett Elementary, Booth-Fickett Magnet K-8, Tucson Magnet High, Mission View Elementary, and Dunbar Pavilion. Demand For Summer School Is Up, But Are Teachers Willing?

School is wrapping up for students across the state, but not all of them will be done with learning. Many in the education community have talked about the need to make up for some of the lessons that didn’t or couldn’t happen this past school year because of the disruptions caused by the pandemic. At the same time, some students and teachers say they just need a break after the year they’ve had. Leon Tynes is one of them. He’s a technology and computer science teacher at the Academy of Math and Science Desert Sky charter school in Phoenix, where he’s been the last three years; he’s been teaching for 12 years overall.
