HRC Mourns Thomas Hardin, Black Transgender Woman Killed in South Carolina
HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Thomas Hardin, a 35-year-old Black transgender woman, who was killed on May 2 in York, South Carolina. Hardin’s death is one of at least 27 deaths of transgender or gender non-conforming people in 2021. We say “at least” because too often these deaths go unreported or misreported.
According to local news, friends have shared that Hardin “identified as a woman,” continued to use the name Thomas and used both he and she pronouns. Friends are remembering Hardin as someone who “always kept you laughing.” A funeral service was held on May 12. Sadly, not much is currently known about Hardin’s life.
In May 2021, popstar Demi Lovato revealed to the world on Twitter that they identified as nonbinary and would begin using the pronouns they/them. A number of Snopes readers asked us about the meaning of the term “nonbinary.” Many also asked about the meaning of the word “genderqueer.”
On the same day, Merriam-Webster’s dictionary reported that searches for the terms “they” and “nonbinary” were “among [its] top lookups on May 19th, 2021, after singer Demi Lovato announced that they identify as such.”
The Trans Journalists Association (TJA) explains the meaning of the term “nonbinary” as:

On May 19, 2021, pop singer Demi Lovato revealed on Twitter that they are nonbinary and are changing their pronouns to they/them.
In a video also debuting their new podcast “4D with Demi Lovato,” Lovato said, “Over the past year and a half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as nonbinary. With that said, I’ll officially be changing my pronouns to they/them.”
“I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” they added.
