Jaime A. Davidson was in prison for nearly 30 years for one of upstate New York s most notorious crimes. Political connections appear to have set him free. Among the dozens of pardons and commutations former President Donald Trump issued before leaving office, one name has left some law enforcement officials reeling: Jaime Davidson, notorious in upstate New York for planning a 1990 robbery that ended in the murder of a police officer.

A slower-than-expected vaccine rollout in the United States may be about to meet a fast-moving new variant of the coronavirus.

Sunday was the busiest day for U.S. airports since mid-March, underscoring concerns that a spike in holiday travel may contribute to the spread of the coronavirus, even as new cases remain alarmingly high and officials plead with Americans to avoid taking unnecessary risks.
The Transportation Security Administration screened nearly 1.3 million people on Sunday, the most since March 15, when airline passenger numbers were in free-fall as the pandemic began to take hold within the United States.
Since then, the number of travelers screened at airports has exceeded one million fewer than a dozen times, including around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

There are now 6,147 people hospitalized for Covid-19 in New York state, a level not seen since the middle of May. For weeks now, the mayor and the governor have been warning every day that things are getting worse, and it’s easy to get lost in a sea of numbers. But to put that figure in perspective, as the Wall Street Journal notes, it is six times the number of New Yorkers hospitalized just two months ago.
