Freshers Rush For Accommodation As Legon Begins Registration Process

  Hundreds of freshers, some accompanied by their parents, yesterday besieged the residential halls of the University of Ghana to go through the residential formalities as the university opened its gates to them. At the Akuafo Hall, Mensah Sabbah Hall, Legon Hall and the Porter Hall, the situation was not different, as parents engaged in arguments and sometimes confrontation with the officials attending to the students. Congestion The huge numbers created congestion and confusion as they virtually threw the COVID-19 protocols, especially social distancing, to the dogs as they jostled and accused one another of either jumping the queue or intentionally being mischievous to create commotion.

Meanwhile, some of the universities have asked their freshers to report on their campuses today. A visit to some of the universities last Saturday showed that some of the freshmen had arrived and were going through registration processes, while adhering to COVID-19 safety protocols. University of Cape Coast At the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the freshmen went through the registration process without difficulty, as they described the exercise as smooth, reports Shirley Asiedu-Addo and Edith Mensah.

BREAKING: Another ex-UNILAG professor dies of COVID-19

Former Dean of Students’ Affairs, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Professor Durojaiye Ajeyalemi, is dead. He died early Wednesday of suspected COVID-19 related complications at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba. Aged 70 years. Ajeyalemi, a Professor of Curriculum Studies died five days after a former Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-obe, died, also of suspected coronavirus complications. Sadly, both dons died a few months after their retirement from the same university. While Professor Ibidapo-Obe retired in July, Professor Ajeyalemi retired in November, both 2020. Confirming Professor Ajeyalemi’s death to Nigerian Tribune on phone, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG (Academic and Research), Prof Oluwole Familoni, said “It is a truth that Professor Ajeyalemi has died early this morning,” Wednesday.

UNIBEN, Unilorin, BUK Announce Resumption Dates

The universities are the University of Benin, University of Ilorin and the Bayero University, Kano. At the University of Ilorin, the Senate approved January 11 for the resumption of academic activities. The varsity’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, in a statement on Monday, said the decision was taken at the 285th emergency meeting of the senate held virtually via Zoom on Thursday. “Following the suspension of the nine-month industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the senate of the University of Ilorin has approved the resumption of academic activities for the Rain Semester from Monday, January 11, 2021.
