In support of its mission to provide sustainable solutions to world problems while preparing the next generation of leaders Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences has joined the Global Challenges University Alliance 2030. The alliance, referred to as GCUA, is a network of more than 15 universities worldwide that have a shared vision of contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through international collaboration and research.

State College Borough Council Approves State High Student Representative

State College Area High School now has an official student representative to State College Borough Council. During its meeting on Monday, council unanimously approved adding a representative recommended by State High student government and appointed annually by council. The position joins two student representatives to council from Penn State’s University Park Undergraduate Association and Graduate and Professional Student Association. State High junior Clarissa Theiss, who brought the proposal to Council President Jesse Barlow and Mayor Ron Filippelli last year, will serve as the high school’s first representative. “I’m so excited not only to serve as a representative but to continue working to promote civic education at State College Area High School,” Theiss said.

Borough Council Approves 2021 Budget After Debate Over Police, Mental Health Funding

Council voted 4-3 to approve the $69 million budget, which includes no tax increase.  The most contentious point of discussions over the past month, the approved budget will authorize 60 sworn police officers while shifting $400,000 funding for the new  Civilian Response Team comprised of mental health professionals and a new  “This is not a perfect budget. It’s an unbalanced budget and we will have to deal with it, maybe more than once. But it is a functional budget,” Councilwoman Theresa Lafer said. “It will help us through the six and 12 months ahead as we see what happens from COVID, from changes in Washington… and the reality of our lives.”
