Wilton CPI given £4m for expansion of bio-manufacturing facilities

By Rachel Conner-Hill echorachelc Chief Reporter (Tees Valley & North Yorkshire) Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen at the CPI centre in Wilton A NORTH-East innovation centre has been given £4million in funding to support the expansion of bio-manufacturing facilities in the region. The funding will allow the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) at the Wilton Centre in Redcar, which provides independent research and development supports the UK’s processing and manufacturing sectors, to refurbish and extend its capabilities. This new capability will allow CPI to support businesses in developing new and improved food products, including foods with increased health benefits, driving forward Teesside’s reputation as a leader in bio-manufacturing and securing the future of companies working in the sector.

Details of the plan remained under wraps at Stockton Council’s latest cabinet meeting.  But leaders agreed back £2.25m of “highway junction improvements” to open the door for the new 300 job project in the borough. Cash from the Tees Valley Combined Authority and its £50m “indigenous growth fund” will prop up the improvements. Council papers show the aim is to use the fund to sustain and support the borough’s “critical economic assets” and key job sites. Commercial confidentiality was the reason given for the scant information offered up at the meeting.  However, reports showed a chunk of the £2.25m would be clawed back through planning agreements.
