Local blood center fishing for donors as they take hit from Texas winter storm

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â Several folks from the community came together to roll up their sleeves and help save lives during the Coastal Bend Blood Center s seventh annual Fishing for Donors event.
The blood drive took place at the Cavender s Boot City store located off SPID in Corpus Christi.
Workers say the Texas winter storm hit their donation intake hard and were excited to see many people come out and help make a difference. Its the right thing to do, so many people are going to need blood and I got plenty of it for sure, so you know what, it just feels like a good thing to give back to the community, said donor Derek Curtis.
The storms left millions in Texas without power, water, and access to food for days.
Jessica and her wife Janessa run Crema Bakery and were victims of the storm, losing their own inventory after the power went out for three days. As food supplies and water resources slowly became available, the couple spent at least $5,000 out of their own pockets to purchase groceries like fresh produce, eggs, meat, and hot soup. They were able to help
Two weeks later, Nathan says the pain of grief remains a rollercoaster for him.
He opened his home to ABC13, sharing memories, the struggle of sorrow and what s next for his children s legacy. My family and the community and my friends have really been there for me, and I think that s what has helped, he explained of how he is finding comfort.
