FORT WORTH, Texas (Tribune News Service) â Based on the fawning national media coverage, youâd think that Texas Democratic legislators are nothing short of civil rights-era heroes.
Their infamous, ongoing junket to Washington has been hailed as a mission to save voting rights in Texas, particularly the rights of people of color.
As a Latino, Abraham Enriquez, is ostensibly someone Texas Dems are trying to help.
But he doesnât see their recent theatrics that way.
âIt is absolutely condescending that an elected official says a certain demographic doesnât have the capability to understand how to vote,â said Enriquez, president and founder of Bienvenido, a conservative organization seeking to empower members of the Hispanic community. âThe Hispanic community in Texas has always been driven by self-reliance and an entrepreneurial spirit. What I am told by Democrats is that I should feel suppressed,â he added.

AUSTIN, Texas (Tribune News Service) â The family of slain U.S. Army Spc. Vanessa Guillen learned this week that among more than a dozen Fort Hood soldiers accused of wrongdoing in her case, none has been removed from the military.
GEORGETOWN, Texas (Tribune News Service) â Citizens of a certain mindset may be put off by their first sight of Gwen Berry.
Her eyelashes are disarmingly long, and sometimes her lips are neon-blue. In the past, she may have issued a few ill-advised tweets. She is a strong, no-nonsense Black woman who isnât shy about speaking out.
And when I say âstrong,â I mean literally. Berry is an athlete who has thrown the hammer more than 255 feet, which places her sixth on the all-time list. She is the world record holder in the weight throw.
She competed in the 2016 Olympics. She won first place in the hammer throw at the 2019 Pan American Games.
GEORGETOWN, Texas (Tribune News Service) â This yearâs celebration of the Fourth of July provides a particularly apt occasion for considering the health of our republic.
Opinions vary. One friend thinks that democracy as we used to know it in America is in extreme peril. Another believes that things are no worse now than they were in the â60s. (I assume he means the 1960s, not the 1860s.)
And a third maintains that Americaâs commitment to democracy endures and that the institutions originated by the founders have succeeded in keeping our nation on track.
I hope he is correct. But, at best, itâs a close-run thing. Liberals and conservatives who are still committed to the values we celebrate on the Fourth of July should be concerned. Some of this concern stems from the remarkable events of the past five years.
