The sheriff’s office says the man ran into the woods. He was never apprehended. Now the sheriff’s office says that DNA testing has linked that assault to a man who, at the time, lived near the Christian camp, less than a mile from the girl’s cabin, in Smith County.

Branning, 30, was arrested in connection with the death of Heath, 25, and was charged with murder. Branning has been behind bars since he was booked into the Webb County Jail on March 16. Heath’s death marked the city’s second homicide in 2021.
