Nederland man dies in hospital after motorcycle accident along Highway 69

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas A Nederland man riding a motorcycle along a Jefferson County Highway died Thursday evening after a car crashed into him from behind, according to a representative from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
It happened a half mile north of Nederland around 6 p.m. on Highway 69 near mile marker 536.
The 29-year-old Nederland man was traveling on a 2017 Yamaha sports bike heading east on Parkway Drive when he approached the feeder road along US 69.

On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed an executive order banning ground transportation of migrants who risk spreading the COVID-19 virus. The governor authorized the Texas Department of Public Safety to stop any vehicle suspected of carrying migrants that could be infected with coronavirus.
He said, “we must do more to protect Texans from this virus and reduce the burden on our communities.”

Major General Tracy R. Norris, Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard, is joining the call for a resolution to the budget shortfalls the National Guard is facing due to the January 2021 deployment of 26,000 Soldiers and Airmen to the U.S. Capital.
According to the release from Tuesday, July 27, the lack of reimbursement has a direct impact on Texas National Guardsmen, as they may be left without pay for the remainder of this federal fiscal year.

Gov. Greg Abbott criticized for ordering state troopers to pull over vehicles with migrants for COVID-19 risk
SAN ANTONIO – Governor Greg Abbott is facing criticism after his latest executive order, which allows DPS troopers to pull over vehicles suspected of transporting migrants.
While the governor said this will reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure in our communities, those who oppose the order said it will lead to racial profiling.
“Governor Abbott does not have the power to unilaterally set immigration policy. State police and local police do not have the power to unilaterally pull over vehicles to unilaterally detain people because of their immigration status,” said Kate Huddleston, attorney for ACLU of Texas.

HOUSTON Many Texans have questions about Governor Greg Abbott’s executive order, which he signed Wednesday.
According to Abbott, the order restricts ground transportation of migrants who pose a risk of carrying COVID-19 into Texas communities. The executive order also directed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to stop any vehicle upon reasonable suspicion of such violation and reroute such vehicles back to its point of origin or a port of entry. DPS also has the authority to impound a vehicle that violates the executive order.
