Potter County and the city of Amarillo have filed a joint grant application with the state s Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority to secure funding to continue the Panhandle Auto Burglary and Theft Unit.
Officials previously noted the Panhandle Auto Burglary and Theft Unit consists of investigators from the Potter County and Randall County sheriff’s offices, the Amarillo Police Department and the Department of Public Safety. Per the interlocal agreement, the targeted funding allotment of $347,960 is to be used from Sept. 1, 2020, to Aug. 31, 2021.
Tammy Chervenka, Panhandle Auto Burglary and Theft Unit s crime prevention coordinator, indicated via an email response to a Globe-News inquiry there have been 950 motor vehicles stolen to date, noting that after including trailers, ATVs and motorcycles the, total increases to 1,183.

ANGLETON â Brazoria County, which hadnât seen as many as 200 cases before this month, smashed through the 300-case barrier Tuesday, eclipsing the previous daily record by nearly 100.
Of the 342 cases, 70 of those came from tests administered over two weeks ago, Brazoria County Spokeswoman Sharon Trower said, which still breaks county records for results from tests administered in the past two weeks, at 272 cases.
âThe stateâs backlog of cases were from specimens collected back in October, so weâre just now receiving them from the state,â Trower said. âI donât have any further information as to why they had a backlog of labs.â

AUSTIN, TX â The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles announced Dec 15. that waivers on expiration dates for all driver licenses (DLs), identification cards (IDs), and certain vehicle title and registration requirements will end on April 14, 2021.
Anyone in need to renew DLs and IDs are urged to make an appointment HERE.
Previously, this waiver issued by Governor Abbott applied to DLs, commercial DLs, commercial learner permits, ID cards and election identification certificates that expired on or after March 13, 2020.
