AUSTIN, Texas â Multiple reports indicate Texas is hiring Texas Tech coach Chris Beard as its new men s head basketball coach.
Beard, 48, will replace Shaka Smart, who resigned to take the vacant Marquette job last week.
Stadium and CBSSports.com both have reported the hiring, which would be the first time Texas has hired a basketball coach from a Big 12 competitor since joining the conference.

The Texas Tribune is leaning into their reporting on the “The Eyes of Texas” story. The Tribune’s latest report reveals emails showing former Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy is among the former players who’s continued the push to keep the school song.
From the Tribune: “Former Longhorn quarterback Colt McCoy, who recently signed with the Arizona Cardinals, was among a group of connected University of Texas at Austin donors who organized an effort last June to pressure university leaders to keep the alma mater song, ‘The Eyes of Texas,’ according to new emails provided to The Texas Tribune. . In addition to McCoy, the list of heavy hitters includes Bud Brigham, an oil tycoon who recently donated an undisclosed five-year gift to the school;
But who were the almosts ? A UT source tells us those two names: Oregon s Dana Altman and Arkansas Eric Musselman.
One of the top names in the coaching industry at the moment, Altman took the Oregon Ducks on a great run through the tournament to the Sweet 16, where his team eventually fell to conference rival USC. Altman has been with Oregon since the 2010-11 season, and has led the Ducks to the NCAA tournament in eight out of his 10 seasons. Altman had the Ducks at 24-7 last season, before the NCAA tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Altman also spent 16 years at Creighton, where he took the Bluejays to the tournament seven times. He has a 690–352 mark, and has been successful at every stop.
