The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Texas Longhorns will lock horns on Wednesday night in front of a raucous Austin crowd, and by raucous, I mean just as wild as it was last year when Texas Tech went to Austin, and by that I mean pretty much empty.
Ryan Mainville of The Daily Toreador reported yesterday that officials in Austin had scaled back the attendance policies heading into the game against Texas Tech amidst a growing number of COVID-19 cases in Big 12 programs.
I m mostly joking about this being usual for Texas to not have any fans, though their home average ranked 5th in the Big 12 last season with just over 9,000 fans per home game compared to the 14,000 that Texas Tech averaged. This year, Texas Tech has been operating at a 25 percent capacity, which has been a definite change of pace for the Red Raiders.

Texas Longhorns men’s basketball (7-1, 1-0) jumped to No. 8 in the latest AP Poll.
That means head coach Shaka Smart’s surging Longhorns jumped two spots from their previous ranking early last week following their Big 12 Conference opener win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. It’s also the highest ranking Texas has seen since 2014-2015, prior to Shaka Smart taking over for Rick Barnes. Notably prior to the most recent rankings, last weekend’s game against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders was cancelled.
Even so, tough sledding lies ahead for the Longhorns. On Saturday, Texas is set to take on the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks (per the latest AP Poll rankings), with the Iowa State Cyclones and No. 9 West Virginia Mountaineers, who recently dropped two poll spots, the next week.

Big 12 play opens with a big college basketball betting matchup when the Kansas Jayhawks visit the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Thursday night.
Kansas has rolled off six straight wins after losing its opener to Gonzaga, playing some stiff competition in that stretch such as Kentucky and Creighton. The Jayhawks are three-point underdogs in Lubbock, taking on a Texas Tech squad that ranks fourth in points allowed (51.6) but hasn’t played the toughest slate to open the year.
