San Angelo registered sex offender could face life in prison

View Comments SAN ANGELO  A San Angelo man, who is a registered sex offender, has been indicted and could receive a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted after another case of child sexual assault, according to court documents released Tuesday. On April 8, 2021, a child, younger than 14, travelling with family made an outcry of sexual abuse. The child named a 38-year-old man, who touched them inappropriately, records state. One of the family members reported the outcry to law enforcement. On April 16, a Tom Green County sheriff s deputy interviewed the man. He told the deputy he had touched the child two weeks before the outcry was made, and two or three times in the last year, according to the affidavit.

Amarillo reports triple-digit increase of COVID-19 cases from Monday

Tuesday s report card also shows that Trauma Service Area A is recording a 5.81% COVID-19 hospitalization rate as of Monday. The rate is recorded daily by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Potter County saw an increase of 69 COVID-19 cases from Monday, bringing the county s total to 18,107 cases since the start of the pandemic. Of the total, 398 are active, which is an increase of 66 net active cases from Monday. There have been 17,246 recoveries and 463 deaths related to the virus, according to the report card.  Randall County saw an increase of 86 COVID-19 cases from Monday, bringing the county s total to 17,588 cases since the start of the pandemic. Of the total, 454 are active, which is an increase of 81 net active cases from Monday. There have been 16,823 recoveries and 311 deaths related to the virus, according to the report card.

Student sues Texas Tech University System over COVID-19 response

An Angelo State University student filed a class action lawsuit against the Texas Tech University System to reclaim portions of tuition and fees paid by students in the 2020 Spring semester that was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The lawsuit was filed on July 20 on behalf of students of the Texas Tech University System who enrolled in the Spring 2020 semester and seeks more than $1 million in damages. In her lawsuit, Peggy Bryan says school officials failed to provide the university experience promised to her and other students when they drastically changed the school s operation to curb the spread of the virus, which has so far killed more than 600,000 people in the United States.
