Bastrop school board lifts district s mask mandate starting June 1

Hours after Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Tuesday a new executive order banning public schools from requiring face coverings effective June 4, the Bastrop school board voted unanimously to keep its mask mandate in place until June 1, when mask wearing will become optional in district facilities. The board s vote came after about 30 minutes of public comments, many from school parents who demanded the district lift its mask requirement effectively immediately. The 10 speakers all favored lifting the requirement, which the district implemented in the fall to help curb the spread of COVID-19. District Superintendent Barry Edwards recommended to the school board that it lift the face covering requirement effective June 1, on the first day of summer school, according to the academic calendar.
