Traditionally, Oscar nominations land early in the year, but it’s safe to say 2021’s ceremony will be different than most. While we don’t know exactly how it’s going to work yet, given how coronavirus has shaken up every aspect of the film industry, it’s likely the Oscars will proceed in relative normality (social distancing included). They’re a tradition that’s continued for more than 90 years and despite a short two-month delay, they still look set to go ahead in April 2021.
Clearly, blockbuster filmmaking is reliant on audiences nostalgia for familiarity, with sequels both beginning and closing the calendar year. The action-comedy sequel
Bad Boys For Life was the last major blockbuster released before COVID-19 forced theaters to shut down, and the recent announcement that the comic book tentpole Wonder Woman 1984 is headed to HBO Max has signaled to many that the future of the theatrical experience is all but over.
However, just because it was a bad year for studios banking on these profits doesn’t mean it was a bad year for sequels. In fact, the eclectic mix of movie franchises that returned to audiences this year shows that Hollywood is turning toward pleasing a lot of different niche groups with sequels tailored to their interests.

Well Schmoes, as 2020 fnally draws to a close we reflect on a year unlike any other in our lifetimes. Thanks to COVID-19, a limited number of movies made it to the big screen. With films debuting everywhere from drive-ins to streaming services, cinema still found a way to entertain us from the comfort of our homes. It remains to be seen what 2021 will bring but, if there is one thing for certain, there are always movies that are highly overrated and underrated by critics and fans alike. As the UnPopular Opinion Guy, I felt it was only fitting to issue my list of the movies I felt that the masses got wrong. Some of these may shock you and some may just piss you off, but these are my honest to goodness perspective of the movies of 2019. I May Destroy You
is experimental and groundbreaking in a number of ways as it unspools the story of a woman s sexual assault and its aftermath. But in the finale, it breaks with its own form in a way that is perfectly tailored to providing the only conclusion to the story that makes sense.

I ve been making annual lists of 50 Wonderful Things since 2010. And I have to admit, I was not sure I was up to it this year.
