Students at Detroit public schools will learn virtually for two weeks following their return from spring break, officials announced Friday.
According to the Detroit Public Schools Community District, students and staff will commence virtual learning for the weeks of April 5 and April 12 “as a safety precaution,” as COVID-19 cases surge in Michigan and Metro Detroit.
Officials say the temporary switch to online learning is designed to “allow employees and students a week of social isolation after spring break to limit the spread of COVID-19.”

DETROIT – The City of Detroit is launching eight neighborhood COVID-19 vaccination sites, adding to an expansion at TCF Center, to combat surging cases and hospitalizations in the city.
Detroit’s vaccination rate, 21% as of Monday, is far below neighboring areas and overall state average, which is 35%. The city is expanding options for residents with an urgent message: Get vaccinated.
Next week, the city will be offering eight additional locations throughout the week, in addition to its Community Saturdays and other outreach programs, to provide Detroiters with the opportunity to get vaccinated in a convenient and familiar location close to home.
Mayor Mike Duggan announced eight new vaccination sites in Detroit neighborhoods Monday, part of the city s effort to vaccinate more Detroiters where they are as Michigan struggles with a new surge in coronavirus cases.
The sites will vary by day and by council district next week, with one or two sites open at a time from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 12-16. Each site will offer the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine.
