View Comments Mayor Mike Duggan will focus on five areas across Detroit to invest $400 million of the COVID-19 pandemic-related federal funding. Detroit expects to receive $826 million in federal funding to address various challenges throughout the city and Duggan is inviting the public to provide feedback on areas needing investments. The first $413 million will be available by  early June, while the second half will come next year, said Deputy Mayor Conrad Mallett.   Key areas Duggan is eyeing include: fighting intergenerational poverty, investing in neighborhoods, investing in parks, improving  recreation and cultural assets, enhancing public safety, closing the digital gap and supporting small businesses, Mallett added.

Berkley School District begins contract negotiations with new superintendent Scott Francis BERKLEY The Berkley School District’s Board of Education has selected its next superintendent. At its May 10 meeting, the board discussed its final two candidates for superintendent: Berkley Schools District Director of Teaching, Learning and Technology Scott Francis and Detroit Public Schools Community District Assistant Superintendent Beth Gonzalez. The current superintendent, Dennis McDavid, will be leaving his job after nine years when his contract expires at the end of June. The district reviewed 24 applicants before whittling them down to Francis and Gonzalez. The board ultimately decided to select Francis, who is in his ninth year working in Berkley, with a 7-0 vote. Before taking on his current job, he was the principal at Pattengill Elementary School.

Farmington school board narrows superintendent search to five

Farmington Public Schools narrowed its superintendent search to five. The district s board of education will interview the five finalists Wednesday and Thursday. The board will narrow the group from five after Thursday s interviews and conduct a second round of interviews May 11-13.  The school board has previously indicated it would like to install a new superintendent by summer.  Four of the finalists are outsiders to the district, and one is an internal candidate. Two are already working as superintendents, while the others all serve in assistant or deputy roles. Community members are welcome to attend each interview virtually.
