For 28 years under its director Ron Kagan, the Detroit Zoo pioneered a worldwide movement to showcase wild creatures more ethically while hosting record numbers of visitors at Detroit s collection and adding dozens of new exhibits.
Kagan announced Tuesday he ll retire this summer. The Detroit Zoological Society has formed a search committee to seek the zoo s next director, according to a news release.
Kagan, 69, will leave his longtime roles as executive director and CEO of the Zoological Society, a nonprofit group that operates the Detroit Zoo, whose assets are owned by the city of Detroit. In a statement, Kagan said, I’ve been in love with DZS and this community from the day I arrived so many extraordinary employees, volunteers, donors and board members have contributed to creating and securing the future of this amazing organization.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - After 28 years at the helm of the Detroit Zoo, its CEO is leaving his post for a job abroad.
Ron Kagan, 69, announced he is retiring from the Detroit Zoological Society this summer, after leading the institution through almost three decades and bolstering its status in the world of life sciences.

The Detroit Zoological Society announced the birth of a female lion cub, the first born in the zoo for since 1980.
Binti, whose name means daughter in Swahili, was born Sept. 10, 2020, to mother Asha and father Simba.
Asha came to the Detroit Zoo from the Buffalo Zoo last year, as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Program.

Simba once lived with the royal family of Qatar, and was given to the zoo in 2013.
Binti was born via cesarean section after Asha experienced difficulty giving birth. Three other cubs were stillborn.
The Detroit Zoo cared for Binti with an incubator and bottle feedings for the first several weeks of her life, then was let into a larger play-pen.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Detroit Zoo announced Tuesday that its first lion born at the zoo in 40 years arrived on Sept. 10, 2020.
The lion is named Binti, meaning “daughter” in Swahili, the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) said. She is the first lion born at the Detroit Zoo since 1980. Her mother, 4-year-old lioness Asha, underwent a cesarean section after she was observed going into labor naturally but then failed to give birth. Unfortunately, three other cubs were stillborn, zoo officials said.
