Steven Smith Awarded Tennessee Historical Commission Special Commendation For His Books Thursday, May 13, 2021
The Tennessee Historical Commission has announced winners of this year’s annual Certificate of Merit competition. These awards are presented each May during National Preservation Month. The Commissioners’ Special Commendation category went to Steven Smith in Soddy Daisy, for authoring four books.
Since 1975, THC’s Certificate of Merit Program has recognized exemplary work by individuals, groups, organizations, corporations, or governmental entities to further promote historic preservation or the study of history in Tennessee. Nominations are solicited from the public in December of the preceding year and judged by category.
JMS students win silver medals at East Tennessee History Day

Jefferson Middle School students Jacob Mohr and Henry Landau placed second with their Junior Group Exhibit “Secret Communication in World War II” and Isabella Liu placed second with her Junior Individual Paper “Stonewall: Fueling a Movement” at 20th annual East Tennessee History Day.
Winners were announced via Zoom on Saturday, March 6. This year’s virtual event featured 125 students and 78 projects. Grades 6 through 12 participated at the regional level from 16 public, private and home schools in eight counties, according to a news release.
First- and second-place winners, with third-place winners serving as alternates, advanced to the state competition, Tennessee History Day on April 10. State winners will advance to nationals in College Park, Md., to be held virtually in June 2021. The East Tennessee Historical Society hosted a virtual âbrown bagâ lecture Wednesday, April 21 featuring Anne GâFellers Mason and her research on Nancy and Abolitionist Elihu Embree.
Warren Dockter, president of the Eastern Tennessee Historical Society opened the event and expressed his excitement to be able to return to programing that they have had to largely forgo during the pandemic.
âThis is our first event we have had in a while. We are very excited to get our programs up and going again,â Dockter said, adding that the next lecture in this series will be held on May 5.
Dockter introduced published author Anne GâFellers Mason highlighting her education as she holds an MA in history and an MFA in play writing.

Founded in 1849, the THS is the oldest continually operating historical organization in Tennessee. Its early collection of documents and artifacts related to the stateâs natural, aboriginal and civil history became the basis for the Tennessee State Museum, and the documents, which include manuscripts dating back to the colonial era, are now housed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
The THS publishes the peer-reviewed Tennessee Historical Quarterly, as well as books and resources on Tennessee history. It also edits the Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture. Among its numerous activities in support of scholarship, the THS has sponsored and produced Tennessee History Day, a statewide competition for students in grades 6-12, since 2009.
