At least 52 people were killed when a massive fire ripped through a juice factory in Bangladesh, officials said Friday. The fire started Thursday afternoon on the ground floor of a six-story Hashem Foods Ltd. factory in Rupganj, east of the capital Dhaka, Debashis Bardhan, deputy director of the fire service and civil defense said. The presence of chemicals and flammable substances like polythene and clarified butter contributed to the blaze in the factory, and made it more difficult to bring under control, the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency reported.

Al menos 52 personas han muerto, varias han resultado heridas y se teme que una cifra indeterminada haya quedado atrapada después de que un incendio masivo arrasó una fábrica en Narayanganj, a 20 kilómetros de Daca, según ha informado este viernes el director adjunto del Servicio de Bomberos y Defensa Civil, Debashish Bardhan. La causa del incendio, que se originó en la planta baja de un edificio de varios pisos, no se conoció de inmediato. No obstante, las autoridades han revelado que en el interior de la instalación estaban almacenados productos químicos y plásticos altamente inflamables.

The country pledged reforms after the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 when a nine-storey complex collapsed killing more than 1,100 people.
