Schools give 2.5% raises
Taylor County School District administrators will receive a 2.5% pay raise for the current fiscal year, before transitioning to an expanded “step” pay system that will guarantee a minimum of a 1% raise each year.
The Taylor County School Board unanimously approved the pay increases at its regular December meeting last Tuesday with little discussion. Previous discussions regarding the pay increase and step system were reportedly held during executive sessions, which are closed to the public and members of the press.

57% of online students failing
Of the more than 440 students enrolled in the Taylor County School District’s virtual school program, more than half – 57% – have either a failing grade or a “D” in at least one subject.
Based on this “grim” report, the school board voted 4-1 Tuesday to require those students to return to “brick and mortar” classes in January following the Christmas break.

Perry Primary School demolition nears
The Taylor County School District is expected to award a $236,640 bid to Boyer Construction Tuesday for the demolition of the old Perry Primary School.
Boyer had the lowest complete bid out of three submitted for consideration.

Taylor County High School reported four COVID-positive students during the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 5.
According to the Department of Health (DOH) dashboard, the four students were symptomatic.
Additionally, Big Bend Technical College (BBTC) and the Taylor County Elementary School (TCES) reported one new positive test each, a BBTC staff member and a TCES student.
Point of Grace Christian also reported a positive case, but it is unknown if it was a student or teacher.
All three of the new positive cases presented symptoms.
Since Sept. 6, the Taylor County School District has recorded 45 total coronavirus cases across its six schools. Point of Grace Christian has reported two.
