Civic Cipher - Sunday, April 25th | Hot 98 3

Civic Cipher Apr 25, 2021 This week, we discuss the verdict in the Derek Chauvin (George Floyd) case. We also have the unfortunate responsibility of responding to the death of Makiyah Bryant on the same day at the hands of the Columbus, OH police department. We take the time to review some of the viral police interactions of the last week including the New Jersey video of the police confiscating bicycles and arresting kids, the shooting of Adam Toledo in Chicago, and a few others.

Newsmaker: Derek Chauvin — A collective sigh of relief

Jury trials are funny things. For many years covering courts, I always found the time spent waiting for a jury to return its verdict to be exhilarating. For starters, and purely from a personal perspective, because juries sat late to deliberate, it meant overtime on the fortnightly pay cheque. And besides, you never knew just how the 12 people were going to see the case laid out before them by prosecution and defence. At the end, it all comes down to their decisions and whether or not there existed “a reasonable doubt”. For anyone who has watched even a portion of the nine minutes of video showing Derek Chauvin slowly choking the life out of George Floyd on a Minneapolis city street in broad daylight on May 25 last year, any reasonable doubt of innocence went out the window at least that’s what every right-thinking person would have hoped.

Biden Calls Floyd Killing Murder in Full Light of Day in Wake of Chauvin GUILTY Verdict / WATCH

President Joe Biden spoke to the nation on Tuesday night after a jury found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty in the murder of George Floyd. “No one should be above the law,” Biden said. “And today’s verdict sends that message. But it’s not enough.” He also called the killing of Floyd, “a murder in full light of day,” saying “it ripped the blinders off for the whole world to see the systemic racism the Vice President just referred to.” The president called on state and local governments to do more to reform policing to reduce killings by law enforcement.

School Resource Officers Might Be Removed From Some HoCo Schools

UpdatedWed, Apr 21, 2021 at 2:06 pm ET Reply(1) In Howard County, a proposal would pull school resource officers from all middle schools, and retrain police officers in high schools. Officers would be required to wear body worn cameras when on school campuses. (Shutterstock) HOWARD COUNTY, MD The day after a decision was handed down by the courts in the Derek Chauvin-George Floyd case, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball proposed several changes be made affecting school resource officers assigned to county schools. I think all of us saw with the verdict yesterday and many other verdicts that didn t happen, cases that didn t happen, there are a lot of concerns and it is worrisome that we have another generation who, for many of them, their only interaction with the police may be what they re seeing on the news, when they see these atrocities, so there is an opportunity to foster a better atmosphere and a better understanding between the police, our community and youth, and hope
