Huge increase in dog thefts during lockdown year A motion has been passed at Derry City & Strabane District Council to instigate an awareness campaign around the dangers of dog thefts, after a sharp rise in thefts in the area since the beginning of the pandemic. Dog thefts in Northern Ireland rose by 51% in 2020 in comparison with the year before, while there were 6 dog thefts reported in Derry & Strabane, compared to 0 in 2019. In April of this year, 8 puppies were reported stolen from the Pullyernan area of Castlederg. In the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council area, there were 5 dog thefts reported to police in 2020, a slight increase from 4 in 2019.

Last week, members of  Strabane Sigersons came together to plant 120 trees as part of the year-long GAA Green Club initiative. The Sigersons are one of 45 pilot clubs taking part  in the initiative which is a collaboration  with Derry City & Strabane District Council, Donegal County Council, Sustainable NI, Ulster GAA and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

For many years concerns have been raised that the City Cemetery has been running out of burial space. Derry City and Strabane District Council, which manages the cemetery, have lodged a planning application in recent days for the extension proposals.
