After months of waiting, Covid restrictions, training ban breaches and wondering if they would ever get back on the field, Leitrim teams go in search of glory next Sunday, May 16, when the Allianz Leagues in football and hurling finally get underway.
Leitrim footballers travel to Markievicz Park on Sunday for the opening game in the Allianz NFL Division 4 North campaign (3 pm throw-in) while the County hurlers start their pursuit of League glory when they host Louth in Avant Money Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada at 2 pm on Sunday.

Those of a certain age may not be aware that Louth footballers did win an All-Ireland title in the second half of the last century. The year was 1957, when the team, captained by famed musician Dermot O Brien, defeated Cork to take home Sam Maguire.
It was Louth’s third All-Ireland success, placing them alongside Mayo, Tyrone and Offaly in the roll of honour. There is a tradition there, but silverware won since has been scarce. Yes, the Wee County in the years after ’57, were always capable of taking a scalp, as Dublin, Kildare and Meath would find out in Leinster combat.

The launch of the Leitrim GAA Supporter’s Club draw will take place online on Thursday, May 13, at 7.30pm with its usual mix of conversation and big-match previews featuring some of the county’s best-known personalities.
The event, which usually takes place in January in Croke Park before the start of the National Football League, has become a must attend event.
