Trail network to extend to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware

DelDOT outlines schedule for Route 24 projects

Thursday, March 25, 2021 Twenty-five years ago, state transportation officials were exploring an idea to dualize Route 24 from the Route 113 intersection in Millsboro to the Route 1 intersection near Rehoboth Beach. And just as with plans to dualize Route 404/9 from the Maryland line to the beaches, the idea was not met with much public support. “There was major public opposition, so DelDOT abandoned the idea,” said Mark Luszcz, Delaware Department of Transportation deputy director of design. However, he said, parts of the plan are coming to fruition on the east side of Love Creek bridge with the ongoing Route 24 widening project. East of the bridge, projects are designed to solve increasing traffic-capacity issues, but on the west side, projects are aimed at safety and operational improvements, not major capacity projects, he said.

Dewey residents, officials continue fight against 5G poles

Friday, October 2, 2020 From calls for civil disobedience to comparisons with the Baltimore Colts leaving town in the dead of night, Dewey Beach residents and officials united in opposition to the installation of 5G poles along the town’s coastline during a March 2 public hearing on an ordinance to regulate wireless facilities. Mayor Dale Cooke said the town has no desire for the poles, but they are mandated by state and federal regulations. The town has contacted the governor, and state and local officials to fight the installation, he said. However, most streets in Dewey are controlled by the state, which is unlike any other town in Delaware, Cooke said. When the town learned about the installations through Verizon, and not the state, Cooke said, the town immediately called the state to put a stop to it.

Dewey Beach passes ordinance to regulate 5G pole design standards

47abc March 4, 2021   DEWEY BEACH, Del. – Dewey Beach residents and town leaders say 5G poles being installed along the beach are an unwanted eye sore. “They claim they have to be right at the entrance to the beach, and it just looks absolutely horrible. It’s right in the way of everything, and we have two companies that are putting them in now. What happens when the three other national companies come in and say they want to put the poles in also?” said Mayor Dale Cooke. Mayor Cooke says that’s why the town passed an ordinance Tuesday that would set design standards for any future poles. The ordinance requires poles to be at least 50 feet from beach entrances, and new structures must be 100 feet from each other. Plus, wireless companies should first consider installing new equipment on existing utility or light poles.
