The Encinitas City Council met Wednesday in closed session to discuss litigation. In open session, the council interviewed applicants for several city commissions. These applicants were approved: Commission for the Arts, Irene Abraham, Kathleen Lees, Randall Sims; Environmental Commission, Christian Adams, Inge Bisconer, Katie Cramer, June Honsberger, William Morrison; Parks and Recreation Commission, Brad Hanson, Ross Ridder, Steven Winters; Planning Commission, Stephen Dalton, Kevin Doyle; Senior Citizen Commission, Mona Angel, Christie Kramer-LeVander, Maureen Lucewicz, Laura Rau; Traffic & Public Safety Commission, Matthew Loecker, Robert Prendergast. The council approved a request to create an Encinitas Equity Committee.

District offers webinars on language program
The Del Mar Union School District has scheduled parent information webinars regarding its Spanish Language Immersion Program in kindergarten and first grade. To apply for the program, parents or guardians must attend one of the webinars. All DMUSD students will have equal access to the Spanish Language Immersion Program via a lottery, regardless of a student’s school of residence. The webinars will include information about long-term goals for the program, research supporting the benefits of biliteracy, the parent commitment requirement, application and enrollment details, and lottery information. Del Mar Union School District’s Spanish immersion program will expand into the first grade this coming school year and welcome a new kindergarten class on a lifelong path toward biliteracy.
Two kindergarten strands began in fall 2020 at Del Mar Hills and Ashley Falls Schools with students receiving instruction in nearly every subject in Spanish as well as celebrating and understanding different cultures.
“This program is even better than what we thought it would be,” said DMUSD Board President Erica Halpern.
Looking ahead to the 2021-2022 school year, the
district has scheduled parent information webinars on Zoom Feb. 9, Feb. 23, March 9 and March 3.
