Iceberg A68a Loses Large Chunk of Ice as it Nears South Georgia

Image: Stef Lhermitte/TUDelft The world’s largest free-floating iceberg appears to have lost its northernmost section, a possible result of it slamming into the shallow continental shelf surrounding the ecologically sensitive South Georgia island. Advertisement A chunk of ice measuring approximately 70 square miles (180 square kilometers) has sheared away from iceberg A68a, according to new photos taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellite and NASA’s MODIS satellite. “What can be seen is the iceberg most likely hitting the continental shelf with its northern tip, causing a part to break off of it, thereby spawning a new berg,” Pierre Markuse, a remote sensing expert, explained in an email. “Up until now, it doesn’t seem like any parts of the iceberg are grounded, but satellite images in the next few days will show whether both parts still move freely with the currents.”

Scientists take important step toward building practical quantum internet

UCalgary quantum physicists on team developing systems that would revolutionize computing, communication Author Share this article The new study used state-of-the-art single-photon detectors to measure photons Daniel Oblak An international research team, including UCalgary quantum physicists, has taken a big step toward building a high-performing, scalable “quantum internet.” A functional quantum internet would dramatically change the fields of secure communication, data storage, precision sensing and computing. In such a network, information stored in quantum bits, or qubits (the basic unit of quantum information) is shared, or teleported, over long distances. “High-fidelity” (high quality) quantum teleportation of photons (elementary particles of light) is essential for secure long-distance communications and a practical quantum internet.

A68a iceberg: Science mission to investigate frozen giant

BBC News By Jonathan Amos image captionRobotic gliders will be used to gather measurements under and around the iceberg A team of scientists is being sent to the South Atlantic to study the giant iceberg A68a. The 3,900-sq-km behemoth is currently drifting offshore of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia where it threatens to run aground. If that happens it could make life extremely difficult for the wildlife haven s penguins and seals as they go about foraging for fish and krill. media captionWatch the footage collected by an RAF plane over A68a The researchers will approach A68a in the Royal Research Ship James Cook.
