Dec 12, 2020 ESCANABA At about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, a deputy with the Delta County Sheriff’s Office was in Meijer when an employee reported that shoplifting, known legally as “retail fraud,” had just occurred. The deputy went to the parking lot and located the suspect in a vehicle leaving the area. The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, leading to a pursuit. Eventually, the vehicle pulled over on 14th Road near M-69, where the driver fled on foot. The driver, a male who was not immediately identified, was from the Wilson area and was located in the woods about two hours later and taken into custody.

The Wisconsin Air National Guard released the name Friday of a fighter pilot who was killed Tuesday when the F-16 he was flying crashed in the Hiawatha National Forest and commended both the Delta County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police for their assistance handling the tragedy. Air Force Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones, 37, of Albuquerque, N.M., was identified as the pilot Friday afternoon, following a mandatory 24-hour waiting period after the notification of next of kin that is required by the Department of Defense. Jones is survived his wife and two children.

The pilot who died in an F-16 crash in the Hiawatha National Forest during an evening training flight on Tuesday was identified on Friday by the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing as Air Force Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones, 37, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is survived by his wife and two children, officials said. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, said Col. Bart Van Roo, the 115th Fighter Wing commander, in a news release from the Wisconsin Air National Guard.

Colorado Springs murder-attempt suspect arrested in Delta

United States Marshals, with assistance from law enforcement agencies in Delta and Montrose counties, arrested an El Paso County attempted homicide suspect Saturday in Eckert. The U.S. Marshals Service identified the suspect as John Anthony Barrera, 46, and said although the arrest warrant was recently issued, the alleged homicide attempt occurred in 2018. Authorities with the Colorado Springs Police Department, whose warrant it was, could not be reached for further information about the case. According to Acting Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal for the District of Colorado Katrina Crouse, the agency received a tip that Barrera was possibly living in Eckert.
