Plea seeks all companies be allowed to sell it in domestic market
The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the Centre and several pharma companies to respond to a petition seeking that all pharma companies making Remdesivir, used in COVID-19 treatment, be allowed to sell it in the domestic market.
A bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Jasmeet Singh issued notice to the Health Ministry, Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, Director General of Foreign Trade and various pharma companies such as Cipla, Zydus and Cadila.
NEW DELHI: A PIL in the Delhi high court has urged it to direct the Centre to permit sale of Remdesivir, used in Covid-19 treatment, by those pharmaceutical companies which manufacture it solely for the purpose of export so that the drug is easily available in the market for needy patients. The petition, which is listed for hearing on Monday before a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jasmeet Singh, has said that there are more than 25 companies in India which manufacture the medicine, but only six to eight of them are permitted to sell it in the domestic market and the rest were producing it for exports alone.

There is speculation about what sort of Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana would make. “He is not the kind of judge who will clash with the executive. Nor is he likely to cause ripples through his legal pronouncements. His will be a quiet term,” said a lawyer who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Justice Ramana was sworn in as the 48th CJI on 24 April. He was appointed as judge of the Supreme Court on 17 February 2014 and will retire on August 26, 2022.He had a brief stint as a journalist with a leading Telugu newspaper and enrolled at the Andhra Pradesh High Court Bar in 1983.
The Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, D N Patel has tested positive for COVID-19, PTI has reported quoting Court Sources. He is currently in home isolation and the Sources have informed that he is.
