NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday orally observed that an acting CBI Director cannot go on for a long time and asked the Centre to consider convening a high-power committee headed by the Prime Minister for the appointment of CBI Director.
On March 12, the Supreme Court had sought reply from the Centre on a plea by an NGO Common Cause, represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan, seeking direction to immediately appoint a regular CBI director.

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre to consider holding a meeting of the selection committee for the appointment of a regular CBI Director before May 2, saying the interim arrangement can’t go on.
“The in-charge arrangements for CBI director cannot go on. There is a point in what Mr (Prashant) Bhushan says”, Justice Nageswara Rao told Attorney General KK Venugopal after the top law officer said the selection committee meeting was likely to take place on May 2.
However, the Bench told the government to hold it earlier and posted the matter for further hearing next Friday.

New Delhi [India], April 5 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday asked the central government to consider convening a meeting of the selection committee comprising the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition (LoP) before May 2 for the appointment of a regular Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director.
A bench of Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice Vineet Saran asked the Centre to consider convening the meeting earlier after Attorney General KK Venugopal told the court that the meeting is likely to be convened on May 2. Take instructions why can you not hold the meeting earlier.Do it early instead of May 2, said the Bench, while posting the matter for hearing on April 16.
The Supreme Court Monday asked the Centre to consider convening before May 2 the meeting of a high-powered committee consisting of the Prime Minister and others for appointment of CBI director observing that in-charge arrangements for the post cannot go on. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Vineet Saran was informed by the Centre that meeting of the committee consisting of the Prime Minister, leader of the single largest opposition party and the Chief Justice of India or any judge of the apex court nominated by the CJI will be convened after May 2. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for petitioner NGO Common Cause which has sought direction for appointment of a regular CBI director, claimed before the bench that the Centre is delaying the meeting of the committee as it wants to bypass the present CJI S A Bobde who is retiring on April 23.
