Driving into the Future: Auto Manufacturing in Canada

Driving presented the latest in its series of Driving into the Future seminars. And for many Canadians, this is the most important of the roundtables we’ll host this year: The state of auto manufacturing in Canada.  But how do we capitalize on this incredible turnaround? Can Canada really become an EV powerhouse? Is there really a future for manufacturing batteries in Canada? Will we finally harness the power of our clean energy and wealth of commodities? And can we really become the auto industry’s Silicon Valley North in developing and testing the self-driving cars we’ve been promised so long?

GM s electric vehicle plan could shake up the energy sector — but how soon?

Why GM s switch to electric vehicles may be more important for the oilpatch than Keystone XL s cancellation GM s aim to be nearly all electric by 2035 has been called an aggressive goal. But regardless of how realistic it is, it s a big statement about where a leading automaker sees the future. Social Sharing

Driving By Numbers: Canada s 10 worst-selling vehicles in 2020

To put it into context, there were only 1.55 million new vehicles sold in Canada in 2020, a loss of nearly 400,000 sales from the prior year’s total. The majority of those losses, as you’d expect, occurred during the second quarter, a three-month period that saw sales volume plunge by more than 250,000 vehicles. Each of Canada’s ten worst-selling vehicles reported decreased sales, but that’s hardly unique. Rare was the established model that didn’t report a decrease, and the Ford Explorer, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Corvette were among the few exceptions. Separating the worst sellers from their unashamed brethren isn’t their rate of decline. Rather, it’s the sheer scarcity of demand.

Driving By Numbers: Canada s 10 best-selling auto brands in 2020

Well, that could’ve been worse. The Canadian auto industry suffered in 2020, but in many corners of the country and at many different brands, the market’s recovery was strong and sustained. Through the summer, fall, and early winter, the market did not collapse like the most dire forecasts had predicted but rather found strength through pent-up demand, payment deferrals, and even new product launches. In fact, for a number of months, poor inventory levels created more of a problem than lackluster demand or dealer shutdowns. The final result was a 20-percent reduction in sales from 2019 levels. By the standards of virtually any other year, that’s a devastating blow. According to Desrosiers Automotive Consultants, only the 23-percent year-over-year decline of 1982 was worse. In terms of total volume, 2020’s 1.55 million sales produced the worst calendar-year sales outcome since – you guessed it – the 2009 meltdown’s 1.46 million units.
