Officials demolished the rest of Champlain Towers South Sunday night in an effort to clear the way for search-and-rescue work for 120 missing people. With a rolling series of sharp pops, a low rumble and a massive plume of white dust, the remaining portion crashed down Sunday night at 10:30 p.m. local time. The demolition is intended to give search-and-rescue crews additional room to look for people who are still missing since a part of the adjoining building collapsed June 24. Officials said they were eager to bring down the building ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa’s potential arrival in Florida in the next few days.

Tropical Storm Elsa approaches Cuba and eyes Florida Caroline Linton © Orvil Samuel / AP St. Vincent Tropical Weather Elsa Tropical Storm Elsa is bearing down on Cuba, with the Miami-based National Hurricane Center predicting it would move over the eastern part of the island on Sunday evening and through the rest of the country on Monday. As of 8 p.m. ET Sunday, Elsa had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was located about 65 miles west of Cabo Cruz, Cuba. The National Hurricane Center said the storm is expected to weaken as it moves across Cuba on Monday. It is then expected to pass near the Florida Keys early Tuesday before moving over parts of the western Florida coast on Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Preparing the site for demolition ahead of the possible arrival of Tropical Storm Elsa early next week had required that the search for victims be halted on Saturday. Most of the building collapsed in the early hours of June 24, sending up a huge cloud of dust and rattling Americans unprepared for such a deadly urban disaster.
