Labour s Kim McGuinness went up against Liberal Democrat Peter Maughan, Conservative Duncan Crute and independent Julian Kilburn for the PCC job. The result was announced in Sunderland following a second round of counting after the vote was looking close run in some areas. In the end Ms McGuinness won by a comfortable majority of 66,000 - a massive increase from a majority of just 6,000 when she was firs elected in 2019.
