Popular Paletas
La Michoacana brings the traditional paletería experience to Madison. Its name celebrates the food traditions of western Mexico. Paleterías popsicle shops and carts of western Mexico are famous for bright-colored, fruit-filled treats. La Michoacana, which has two locations in Madison, offers dozens of flavors of neatly stacked paletas, all made in-house with a cream or milk base and ingredients ranging from cheesecake to mamey sapote, a tropical fruit. “It is incredible to see the amazement in children’s faces when they see the colors,” says Yazmin Valerio, manager of La Michoa

2021’s
Ride the Drive was Madison’s first major city-wide event since the summer of 2019. It wouldn’t have been possible without the volunteers, young and old, who stepped in to help.
“I’m one of the old timers,” joked Joe Clausius, a volunteer and former Madison alder, who sat on the city council the year the ride originated. “I volunteer for all the ‘Drives.’ I have every t-shirt!”
In a typical year, Ride the Drive requires about 100 volunteers. This year, with the event spread across four locations, it took nearly 600.
“So many people have come up and said, ‘We live in this neighborhood. This is great, ” said Clausius. “This is much more of a neighborhood feel.”

It s food cart season, folks!
Vaccinations are rolling out, the winds are warming and, most of all, the food carts downtown are starting to come out of hibernation. Could this be nature healing? Or do Madisonians just have an insatiable hankering for top-notch bites served out of a moving vehicle? We would bet on the latter, but either way, there are stands for snacking on every cuisine imaginable right here in Madison. Here are a few food carts we’re most excited about, new and old, that have opened their windows and turned on their flattop grills for an exciting 2021 season.

The flagship Dane County Farmers Market on the Square hasn’t returned yet because of the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean summer market shopping is canceled.
