COVID-19 case daily count in Evansville, Vanderburgh sees 89 new cases

EVANSVILLE, Ind. The coronavirus pandemic s rollercoaster ride through Vanderburgh County took an upswing Wednesday with 238 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. After two days of sharply decreasing daily case counts, Vanderburgh s totals on the Indiana State Department of Health s COVID-19 dashboard shot back up. The county recorded two new COVID-19-related deaths. Statewide, there were 4,731 new cases and 62 new COVID-19-related deaths Wednesday. There have  now been a total of 14,207 cases of COVID-19 and 184 deaths in Vanderburgh County since the first known case emerged on March 19. Warrick County has reported 4,761 COVID-19 cases, Posey 1,741, Gibson 2,840, Spencer 1,319 and Perry 1,108.

New holiday traditions this year allow families who have hospitalized children to feel more comfortable as Christmas approaches. They say they’ve expanded their Christmas decorations throughout the house and are providing families with some online activities - like a virtual visit with Santa Claus, and tablets to connect with families at home for virtual holiday celebrations.

The vaccine manufactured by biotech firm Pfizer, the first to get emergency federal approval, was administered at 7:18 a.m. Wednesday in a large lobby area at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Warrick County. It is intended at first for frontline health care workers. Deaconess spokeswoman Pam Hight acknowledged Tuesday night that “five clinical staff members” were given the vaccine Tuesday as part of a “vaccine process practice session.” The vaccines were administered by registered nurse Todd Oliver and nurse practitioner Karen Bass. The first to receive it Wednesday morning was Dr. David Ryon, with critical care and pulmonary medicine. He also has an 8-year-old son he’s kept home from school due to concerns about COVID-19.

Deaconess Health System gave COVID-19 vaccinations to several unnamed employees on Tuesday, the day before an event it had billed as the first COVID-19 vaccinations administered by Deaconess. The vaccine, intended at first for frontline health care workers, arrived at Deaconess Tuesday morning. Deaconess had already invited news organizations to attend a Wednesday morning event at Deaconess Gateway Hospital at which, it said, frontline medical professionals would be the first to be vaccinated.

Deaconess anticipated receiving 1,950 doses of the vaccine manufactured by biotech firm Pfizer, the first to get emergency federal approval. It s the first of what Deaconess hopes will be many deliveries. The vaccine will be stored in an ultra-cold freezer inside a laboratory but given widespread security concerns, Deaconess won t say where that freezer is located. Deaconess Midtown Hospital is in Downtown Evansville, and Deaconess Gateway Hospital is in Warrick County. Deaconess did say just one of its locations is involved in storage.
