Why John Collins could be a perfect fit for the Spurs

Why John Collins could be a perfect fit for the Spurs Share this story Photo by Scott Cunningham/NBAE via Getty Images If one thing is consistently true about the San Antonio Spurs, it’s that it’s often difficult to gauge what they’re thinking. That remains true heading into an offseason that could go a number of different directions, but at least two things have been well known regardless of if PATFO says anything about it or not: the Spurs need to address the power forward position, and they’ll have money to burn this summer. One player who could help fill the PF void is Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins, who helped lead his team to their first playoff appearance since 2017 and first Conference Finals since 2015. While his numbers this season dipped a bit from his career year in 2020, his overall value has still gone up, showing he may have been right to not sign the $90 million extension he was offered last summer.

Nate McMillan gets a deal, John Collins future and internal growth: GM Travis Schlenk on the state of the Hawks

26 The run the Hawks just had in the Eastern Conference finals reminded general manager Travis Schlenk of the experience he had with the 2013 Warriors, when he was an assistant general manager. That was the first glimpse into Golden State potentially turning into a juggernaut. The similarities are similar between that Golden State team and this Atlanta team. Both were filled with inexperienced, young players surrounded by key veterans who helped propel them into the postseason. The Warriors took down a 57-25 Denver team in the first round of the playoffs before running into the Spurs, the eventual Western Conference champion. Steph Curry played on a bum ankle that series and the Warriors lost Andrew Bogut.
