The Murfreesboro City Council was âcaught off guardâ by Republic Servicesâ request to expand the Middle Point Landfill trash volume by nearly 95 percent.
At its workshop last Thursday, Mayor Shane McFarland said the council was not included in any of the discussion of the potential expansion. If approved, the existing trash volume of over 38 million cubic yards will be increased by 32 million cubic yards from the landfillâs backside toward Highway 231 and East Jefferson Pike.
McFarland said Director of Water Resources Darren Gore received a letter which said Republic Services had submitted a request to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) and the Tennessee Central Solid Waste Regional Board for the landfill expansion.
